Our Story
Hocking Hills Winery, founded by the Davidson family in Logan, Ohio, sits on land that has been in the Davidson family since the spring of 1960, when Max and Loris Davidson moved their growing family from Lima, Ohio. Max and Loris purchased just over 100 acres where they raised cattle until the late-1990’s.
By 2007, after Max and Loris had passed, the Davidson family was challenged with defining its future vision. The land that had once raised cattle had been largely left to itself for the preceding twenty years as Max and Loris retired and the Davidson children grew and began raising families of their own. Despite being unable to keep the land as a cattle farm, the Davidson children and grandchildren were committed to keeping the land in the family, and for agricultural production.
At a family meeting, a passing comment wondered if the land could be used to start a vineyard. It was not discussed much further, but the seed of that idea had been planted in the mind of Blaine Davidson, Max and Loris’ grandson. Blaine was pursuing his MBA at the time and was enrolled in an entrepreneurship course. The course required the development of a business plan for the final project. Blaine elected to develop his business plan as a vineyard on the Davidson family land. After receiving an “A” on the plan, Blaine presented it to the family, who enthusiastically approved, and Hocking Valley Vineyards was born.
Due to the significant amount of labor involved in maintaining a vineyard, Blaine and his future wife, Allison, relocated to Logan in 2009 so that they could better tend to the vineyard while commuting to their “real jobs” in Columbus on a day-to-day basis.
The goal from the start was to build an organization that would endure for future generations. By 2013, the vineyard had 5 years of successful operations, but it was clear that to achieve their goal, a further step was needed. Early that year Blaine presented a plan to establish Hocking Hills Winery, to which the Davidson’s, again, enthusiastically agreed.
To help with the start-up and operation of the winery, in the fall of 2013, Blaine’s brother and sister-in-law, Drew and Laura Davidson also moved to Logan, building a new home on the Davidson family land.
To build and start a winery requires a significant financial investment. Over the next year and a half, the Davidson’s pooled their resources with several close friends and family members to launch the company. In April of 2015, Hocking Hills Winery opened its doors to the public and is proud to maintain a family-oriented business.
Hocking Hills Winery is proud to be family owned and operated. Operations for the Hocking Hills Winery family of brands is managed by Blaine Davidson, CEO, Allison Davidson, Chief Operating Officer, Drew Davidson, CFO, and Laura Davidson, Chief Marketing Officer for the company.
